My garden wasn’t doing well last summer. The tomatoes were struggling, the ground was dry, and I was ready to give up on the whole thing.

A neighbor who has been gardening for decades came over one afternoon and showed me how to improve the soil.

He didn’t charge me anything. Didn’t ask for a favor.

He just helped.

A few weeks later, my plants started growing again.

That experience has stayed with me, especially after reading about the connections between living things.

The plants needed healthy soil. The soil needed nutrients and water. I needed knowledge. And someone else had knowledge they were willing to share.

Everything was connected in a way I hadn’t appreciated.

Now, whenever my garden produces more vegetables than I need, I leave a basket by the road with a sign that says “Please take some.”

Funny how one small act can keep moving from person to person.
